Chemotherapy and your oral health
In this day and age everyone knows
someone who has had or is currently
undergoing chemotherapy following a
diagnosis of cancer, it may even be
yourself. Do you know that chemo can
have side effects to the mouth, some
serious enough to delay or even stop
cancer treatment? To reduce the chances
of these problems cancer patients  should
always see there dentist at least two
weeks prior to starting chemo therapy.
Your dentist will examine your mouth and
also prescribe the use of a chlorhexidine
mouth rinse twice daily as well as a
prescription strength fluoride gel. These
products will help to reduce bacteria in the
mouth hopefully  avoiding the
development of infections and mouth
soars. Diligent brushing with an extra soft
toothbrush after each meal is a must as
well as flossing twice daily. Reducing
plaque is so important while undergoing
chemo, it can mean the difference between
comfortable chewing and swallowing, or
even discomfort or  pain. If you know
someone with a recent diagnosis of cancer
and upcoming chemo please share these
precautionary tips with them, they’ll be
glad you did!
Each one of us can make a huge difference!
Each of us has the opportunity to make new
choices in our daily lives to create new habits
that are consistent with creating environmental
sustainability.
Some ideas include:
Only purchase items whose packaging,
ingredients and production are sustainable. Take
reusable canvas bags when you shop. Reduce,
Reuse, Recycle. Plant an organic garden. Find a
houseplant you like and learn how to nurture it
carefully and with awareness. Volunteer with local
organizations that clean up the environment. Use
a reusable water bottle or bring your own coffee
cup when you purchase coffee. Identify a local
pro-environment ordinance regulation that is
being considered and support it. Buy food from
our local farms. Look around your home and
update any areas of costly lost energy. Plan a
hike with friends or family. Spend some
moments of awareness in nature each day.

Watch or read something that inspires you
everyday. Smile at yourself in the mirror. Write
down 3 things you are grateful for.
